Student Opportunities

As a student in the music department, you have an exciting array of opportunities both in O’Neill and all around campus. You may audition for one of our vibrant ensembles, including our opera, or participate in performance and programming by other clubs and organizations on campus.

Under the guidance of a music faculty advisor, you may complete a senior thesis, which could focus on analysis or history, and could even take you to a library in Europe. Many music majors also study abroad, and the department offers a special scholarship for intensive summer music study.

PreK-12 music teaching licensure through Saint Mary’s College

Notre Dame Music Majors may earn Music teaching certification through Saint Mary’s College. Your coursework and field experience will prepare you for an Indiana Music Licensure, covering all Vocal and Instrumental Music from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. While you will take most of your Music classes at Notre Dame, you will take additional courses in Music and Education at Saint Mary’s College. Your final semester in the program will be your student teaching experience in both elementary and secondary schools. With a 100% employment rate upon graduation, the Saint Mary's College Music Education program can help you fulfill your search for a career in the classroom, rehearsal room, and on the football field!  For more information contact the Chair of the St. Mary’s Music Department Nancy Menk.

Globally Engaged Citizens

Kelvin Wu 1200
Kelvin Wu added a German major to go with his piano performance major to develop a better understanding of "lieder" — songs which combine classical music and poetry. While studying abroad in Berlin, he took lessons with one of the world's leading collaborative pianists.

Notre Dame’s Globally Engaged Citizens program rewards the learning and experiences you are already engaging in — and will stand out on your resume and show employers and graduate schools that you’re prepared to be a global citizen.

Students in any college or school can earn the certificate by taking two classes and participating in cultural activities on and off campus. You may already be well on your way to meeting the requirements.
