Biography
Jon Bullock is an ethnomusicologist whose research is situated at the intersections of sound, technology, and power in 20th and 21st-century Kurdistan. He completed his PhD at the University of Chicago in 2022 and was a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University's Institute of Sacred Music in 2022-23. Jon is currently working on a monograph that explores the role of music in Kurdish-language radio broadcasting. His broader research interests include various aspects of music theory and practice across Kurdistan, sacred music traditions of the Middle East, decolonial theory, and radio/media studies. He has presented his research at annual meetings of the Society for Ethnomusicology, the American Musicological Society, the Canadian Society for Traditional Music, and the Middle East Studies Association, among others. His work has also appeared in edited volumes and peer-reviewed journals, including world of music (new series), and the journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music.
