Biography
Dr. Emily Castleton is a specialist in teaching contemporary vocal styles. Her distinctive combination of voice science, vocology training, professional performance experience, and university teaching informs her approach to singer training. Through evidence-based and empathetic teaching practices, she meets students at the intersection of technical excellence, artistic expression, and stylistic authenticity. Her collegiate teaching experience includes appointments at Shenandoah Conservatory, the University of Utah, and Brigham Young University.
Castleton is a voice scientist and NCVS-trained Vocologist. She has presented at national and regional conferences, including the Voice Foundation Symposium in Philadelphia, the NATS Cal-West Regional Conference, the Performance Voice Conference, and the Utah Music Educators Conference. She has developed professional development programs for classical singers and voice teachers seeking to sing and teach contemporary vocal styles. Her research interests include contemporary voice pedagogy, functional voice training systems, vocal acoustics, and musical theatre performance.
As a performer, Castleton has built a career spanning musical theatre, contemporary commercial music, opera, concert, and recording. Her extensive musical theatre experience includes work with Tuacahn Center for the Arts, Hale Center Theater, Sundance, and other professional companies throughout the western United States. She has toured internationally with the BYU Young Ambassadors, performed with the Jerusalem Philharmonic and Millennium Choir, and appeared on multiple commercial recordings as both a soloist and ensemble member.
Her students have gone on to perform on Broadway and national tours, in regional theatre, and as recording artists and educators.
As a passionate educator, Castleton is committed to helping singers develop confident, healthy, and expressive voices while fostering stylistic authenticity, artistry, storytelling, and the skills necessary for lifelong vocal sustainability and joy in singing.
