Biography
Some of his career highlights include a Carnegie Hall debut praised by the New York Times and The American Prize awarded to the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble under his baton. He is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Popiel has appeared as a conductor and clinician across North America, Europe, and Asia, with recordings released on Klavier, Naxos, Ecstatic, Summit, Cantaloupe, and Mark Custom. Recent work includes a conducting residency with the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra, resulting in a five‑CD box set of James Barnes’s nine symphonies.
Prior to his appointment at Notre Dame, he served as Director of Bands and later the Dean of the School of Music at the University of Kansas. He has also held faculty positions at Indiana University and Oklahoma State University and taught in the public schools of Texas and Michigan.
