Patrick Yim, Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola in the University of Notre Dame's Department of Music, has released a new album on the internationally renowned classical label Naxos featuring works for violin, viola, and piano by acclaimed Chinese-American composer Chen Yi. The recording, available worldwide beginning July 24, 2026, showcases Yim as both violinist and violist in collaboration with pianist Kiu Tung Poon.
The album presents four works showcasing Chen Yi's distinctive compositional voice, blending Chinese musical traditions with contemporary Western concert music. Featured works include Spring in Dresden, The Soulful and the Perpetual, Three Bagatelles from China West, and Chinese Folk Dance Suite.
One of today's most influential composers, Chen Yi has received numerous international honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Charles Ives Living Award, election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and recognition as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music.
"This recording reflects years of artistic collaboration with Chen Yi and my ongoing commitment to championing music by living composers," said Yim. "Her music bridges cultures with extraordinary imagination while remaining deeply expressive and accessible. It has been a privilege to bring these remarkable works to a wider audience."
The recording continues Yim's longstanding advocacy for contemporary music and intercultural collaboration. An internationally recognized violinist, he has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works and has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. His recordings have appeared on Albany, Navona, New Focus Recordings, Pentatone, Ravello, Acis, and Naxos.
