The Department of Music recently welcomed revered pianist Ann Schein for a weekend residency. In addition to a recital of Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin, she presented a masterclass during which undergraduate students Joanne Kim, Audrey Steiner, Kelvin Wu, and Zhengyi Zheng, presented works of Bach, Chopin and Liszt. Ann Schein represents a unique link to piano legends of the past, having studied with Arthur Rubinstein, Dame Myra Hess, and Mieczyslaw Munz. The wisdom of her teachers, combined with her own experiences as a multifaceted musician, shone in her very detailed and encouraging work with the students.
The Department of Music has a longstanding commitment to bringing in guest teachers and performers of the highest caliber. In the piano area alone, visitors have included the legendary Leon Fleisher as well as Jerome Lowenthal, and Robert McDonald, both on faculty at the Juilliard School.
