Music of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin A program of works for solo piano, and cello/piano duo, with Notre Dame Music faculty members John Blacklow, piano; and Daniel Katz, cello. In their Moscow youth, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin were precocious classmates and close colleagues in both piano and composition, writing in a late-Romantic idiom relatively similar to each other. Over time, Rachmaninoff's tonal language remained rather consistent, as he evolved into one of the most popular and enjoyably accessible composers of all time. In contrast, Scriabin gradually chose to venture into more adventurous sonorities and harmonies, even exploring synesthesia and mysticism. This program of their works traces their transformations, and concludes with Rachmaninoff's marvelous Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 19 in G minor.
