Programs of Study: Concentrations

Music History and Theory

The requirements for a 33-credit major with a concentration in Theory and History are:

  • Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory I): 0 credits for major
    (Prerequisite course; 3 credits count as University elective)*

  • Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory II) 3 credits

  • Chromatic Harmony (Theory III) 3 credits

  • Twentieth-Century Music: Structure and Style (Theory/History IV): 3 credits

  • Musicianship Labs (to be taken concurrently with Theory I-III)

  • History I-III: 9

  • Four 3-credit electives: 12

Honors in Music History and Theory (optional) require 6 additional credits:

  • One additional upper-level 3-credit course in Music
  • Senior Project, to be determined with adviser

*Students who have had previous music education may place out of the prerequisite, Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory I), by examination.

Applied lessons and ensembles are encouraged, but not required. Students intending to continue the study of music after graduation should maintain a rigorous program of lessons and applied music.

Performance

The following curriculum outline describes the requirements for majors in the performance concentration who entered the University as first year students in the fall semester of 2008 or earlier.

For those who have entered the University as first year students in the fall semester of 2009 or later, the curriculum has been modified. Please refer to the changes listed in italics at the end of the following curriculum summary.

The requirements for a 36-credit major with a concentration in Performance are:

  • Studio Lessons in the freshman year (1 credit each for 2 semesters): 0 credits toward major (Prerequisite course; 2 credits count as an “activity” elective)

  • Advanced Performance Studio (2-credits of private study each semester): 12 credits


  • Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory I): 0 credits toward major (Prerequisite course; 3 credits count as University elective)

  • Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory II): 3 credits

  • Chromatic Harmony (Theory III): 3 credis

  • Twentieth-Century Music: Structure and Style (Theory/History IV): 3 credits

  • History I-III: 9 credits

  • One 3-credit upper-level Music course: 3 credits

  • Three additional elective credits in Music: 3 credits

Honors in Music Performance (optional) require 6 additional credits.

  • One additional upper-level 3-credit course in Music and/or additional credits of Advanced Performance Studio
  • Senior Project or Recital to be determined with adviser)

Six semesters of departmental ensemble participation.

Performance concentrators must present a Senior Recital. (Honors majors must present an additional recital.)

Modifications for students entering fall 2009 or later.

  • Studio Lessons in the freshman year (1 credit each for 2 semesters) will be counted toward the credit total for the major (no longer prerequisites).

  • Instead of one 3-credit upper-level Music course, students are required to take two 3-credit upper-level Music courses in theory or music history at the 30000 level or higher.

  • Previously, the senior recital was not counted toward the credit total for the concentration; now it is (1 credit).
