Concentrations
Music Theory and History
The requirements for a 33-credit major with a concentration in Theory and History are:

Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory I): 0 credits for major
(Prerequisite course; 3 credits count as University elective)* -
Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory II): 3 credits

Chromatic Harmony (Theory III): 3 credits

Twentieth-Century Music: Structure and Style (Theory/History IV): 3 credits

Musicianship Labs (to be taken concurrently with Theory I-III): 3 credits

History I-III: 9 credits

Four 3-credit electives in theory or music history at the 30,000 level or higher: 12 credits
Honors in Music Theory and History (optional) requires 6 additional credits:
- One additional upper-level 3-credit course in theory or history (30,000 level or higher)

Senior Project to be determined with adviser: 3 credits
*Students who have had previous music education may place out of the prerequisite, Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory I), by examination.
Applied lessons and ensembles are encouraged but not required. Students intending to continue the study of music after graduation should maintain a rigorous program of lessons and applied music.
Performance
The requirements for a 42-credit major with a concentration in Performance are:

Studio Lessons in the freshman year (minumum 1 credit each for 2 semesters) : 2 credits

Advanced Performance Studio (2-credits of private study each semester): 12 credits

Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory I): 0 credits toward major (Prerequisite course; 3 credits count as University elective)

Harmony and Voice Leading (Theory II): 3 credits

Chromatic Harmony (Theory III): 3 credits

Twentieth-Century Music: Structure and Style (Theory/History IV): 3 credits

History I-III: 9 credits

Two 3-credit electives in theory or music history at the 30,000 level or higher: 6 credits

Three additional elective credits in Music: 3 credits
- Six semesters of departmental ensemble participation: 0 credits for major
- Performance concentrators must present a Senior Recital: 1 credit. (Honors majors must present an additional recital.)
- In order to graduate with a concentration in performance, students must demonstrate proficiency in ear-training. This requirement may be fulfilled through successful completion of Musicianship I, II, and III. Those students who demonstrate sufficient skill levels in a proficiency exam (to be administered every fall semester) may be waived from one or more of these courses, with permission of the DUS.
Honors in Music Performance (optional) requires 6 additional credits:
- One additional upper-level 3-credit course in theory or history (30,000 level or higher) and additional credits of advanced performance study : 5 credits total
