Baritone Stephen Lancaster enjoys a versatile career as a young vocal artist and teacher. He has sung roles ranging from Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus) to Nanni (L’Infedeltà Delusa) to Schaunard (La Bohème), in appearances with the Motor City Lyric Opera, Opera Notre Dame, Great Lakes Lyric Opera, and Arbor Opera Theater, among others. Since 2007, Mr. Lancaster has served on the voice faculty at the University of Notre Dame, and he recently taught at the summer program of the Franco-American Vocal Academy in Périgord, France.
Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Mr. Lancaster holds a D.M.A. in vocal performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied with George Shirley and Caroline Helton. As a fellow at SongFest in 2008 he sang in the west coast premiere of John Musto’s Book of Uncommon Prayer. Mr. Lancaster appears frequently in concert, having performed Haydn’s Nelsonmesse and Fauré’s Requiem with the South Bend Symphony. In 2010 he will premiere a new work with the Notre Dame Concert Band at Carnegie Hall. A passionate proponent of art song repertoire, he has made guest appearances at universities in the United States and Canada and has collaborated with renowned pianist Martin Katz. Mr. Lancaster was a finalist in the Grand Concours de Chant: Tribute to Gerard Souzay in 2009 and participated in the Kennedy Center Conservatory Project, where he represented the University of Michigan.
In addition to classical singing, Mr. Lancaster is active in sacred music as an organist, singer, and choral conductor, having served in various churches, performed sacred concerts, and conducted workshops both in the United States and France. Currently he serves as Choir Director and Associate Organist at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Elkhart, IN.
