Hailed as "a brilliant performer, a gifted musical presence with a high sense of
pianistic fantasy" (Salzburger Nachrichten), "stylistc breadth and virtuosity,
clarity and elan" (Strad Magazine), and "great intensity and energy" (The
Gramophone), pianist John Blacklow has been presented on many of the world's
most renowned concert stages. In Europe, he has been invited to perform in several major concert series, including the Musikverein in Vienna, Wigmore Hall in London (Music Masters series), and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In the U.S., invited performances have included Carnegie Hall’s “Distinctive Debuts” series and Merkin Hall in New York, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, and both the Kennedy Center and the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. Recent seasons have also included performances in Athens, Birmingham (UK), Brussels, Paris, Venice, Zurich, and Seoul.
During 2003-4, Blacklow was selected, with violinist Jennifer Frautschi, as a “Rising Star” by Carnegie Hall and E.C.H.O. (European Concert Hall Organization), and was presented on several major concert series throughout Europe, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie in Cologne, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Cite de la Musique in Paris, and Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels. Blacklow was invited by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to perform at the Grammy Hall of Fame awards for both Zubin Mehta and Isaac Stern. He has made national television appearances in the U.S. and Asia. Radio performances have included National Public Radio in the U.S., BBC’s “In Tune” in the United Kingdom, and on many other radio broadcasts across U.S., Europe, and Asia. Blacklow has performed many times as keyboardist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Pierre Boulez, Leonard Slatkin, and John Williams. He has also participated in the Green Umbrella new music series, the Princeton University Composer's ensemble, the L.A. Philharmonic Chamber Music Society, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He has recorded for Universal Music and DG/iTunes.He has recorded for DG/iTunes, Universal Music, and recently released a solo album for EDI Records entitled
"Prism", featuring works of Alban Berg, J.S. Bach, Robert Schumann, and Frederic Chopin.
A Steinway Artist, Blacklow was born in Boston and studied with Tatiana Yampolsky, graduating from Harvard University, The Juilliard School, and U.S.C. He currently serves on the piano faculty of the University of Notre Dame.
